Sauvignon Blanc, Nelson NZ - My 3D Vines

The wine world was rocked when Kiwi ‘Savvy’ made its first appearance on the scene around 30 years ago. Since then it has beguiled us with its pure, crunchy flavours of exotic fruit; gooseberry, passion fruit and lime. Our Sauvignon Blanc vines are located at a wonderful boutique winery in the up-and-coming region of Nelson, based on the north tip of the South Island. It’s organically made and has all the delicious fruit and flavour you’d expect of NZ Sauvignon. Partners love it!

The vines & wine

New Zealand is famous for its fresh, grassy, perfumed style of Sauvignon Blanc. The iconic region of Marlborough was the first place to produce the exotic style we know and love. However, Nelson, just to the west of Marlborough is now making Savvy to rival, if not better, this famous region. It has the highest sunshine hours of any region in NZ and its sheltered, coastal climate and semi-fertile soils make it ideal for aromatic varietals like Sauvignon Blanc. It’s also a gorgeous place to visit.

Our vines are situated in the so-called ‘home block’ surrounding owner Greg and Amanda Day’s house and the 80 year old cottage amongst the vines. The vines are harvested with machine, which is standard practice in New Zealand, usually around April of every year, in the cool of the morning, to preserve freshness. The vinification takes place at cool temperatures in large stainless steel tanks. Bottling takes place quite soon afterwards, sealed under screw cap. At all stages, preserving freshness of fruit is the main aim of Greg and his talented winemakers Emmanuelle David and Neil Todd. When you open a bottle for the first time, the powerful fragrance and piercing flavours will captivate you and your friends.

Greg and Amanda win many awards at national competitions, such is the standard of their wines at all levels.

In keeping with the clean, green image that New Zealand enjoys, Greg is working hard at becoming fully organic – what the Kiwis call ‘sustainable status’. He now uses sheep (what else?) to roam amongst the vines in winter to help keep the grass short and to provide a natural fertiliser. He no longer uses herbicides and chemicals, which is a real benefit to both the drinker and the environment. The wines are very well made and offer incredibly attractive drinking.

With the Kahurangi National Park nearby, the stunning backdrop of Mount Arthur and the vibrant artistic town of Nelson to explore nearby this is a great place to visit when taking the big trip down under!

We ship the latest vintage to Vineyard Partners as soon as it is bottled. So the very same year Partners can taste their fresh and vibrant wine from their grapes harvested in the spring.

The region

New Zealand is famous for its fresh, grassy, perfumed style of Sauvignon Blanc.

The iconic region of Marlborough was the first place to produce the exotic style we know and love. However, Nelson, just to the west of Marlborough is now making Savvy to rival, if not better, this famous region. It has the highest sunshine hours of any region in NZ and its sheltered, coastal climate and semi-fertile soils make it ideal for aromatic varietals like Sauvignon Blanc.

Whilst Marlborough grabs all the headlines, nearby Nelson is very much on the rise. The wines are very similar in style; exuberant, fruity and fragrant. However, they tend to be a little softer, gentler and less aggressive and are all the better for that.

They excel on their own as an aperitif wine. They also go well with Pacific Rim dishes, Thai curries, smoked salmon and oysters.

Greg and Amanda own a two-bedroomed cottage on the estate which sleeps up to five people.  The cottage has been completely refurbished and offers luxury accommodation amongst the vines. Vineyard Partners can use the cottage at special rates. Details are included in the welcome pack.

Partners in Kahurangi will automatically receive an invitation to our New Zealand wine tastings and dinner in the UK hosted by 3D – Greg and Amanda will also join us on alternative years. This will be a great opportunity to sample the latest vintage from your vineyard as well as other wines from the estate. A small slice of New Zealand brought to you.
