It’s Pancake Day! Pairings for pancakes may not be the first thing you think of to celebrate this special day. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that wine is our favourite way to celebrate pancake day! So, what wine to have with your pancakes? Well that of course depends on the filling.
Here are a few recommendations from the 3D stable you might like to consider:
Pairings for pancakes with sugar and lemon
Try our fabulous Coteaux du Layon Rochefort from Gilles Sorin at Domaine de la Motte. It’s a sticky made from old vine Chenin Blanc that has botrytised on the vine. The reason it is such a fabulous wine pairing for pancakes is that there is a seam of fresh acidity to counterbalance the sweet apricot and tropical fruit flavours. As long as you put plenty of sugar on your pancakes, then this should be a simple yet delectable match!
Pairings for pancakes with fresh berries, strawberries, raspberries or blueberries.
Try our lovely Crémant de Loire sparkling pink from Georges Bureau at Domaine de Salvert. The red berry fruits and gentle spice from this creamy sparkler is just the thing for this lighter pancake topping.
Pairings for pancakes with chocolate sauce
Strong black coffee! However, if you insist on a wine, then try an older vintage of our Gigondas from Montirius in the Rhône Valley. The deep, spicy, damson and plum fruit and juicy texture might well be a revelation to you! Christine and Eric Saurel at Montirius first introduced us to the ‘chocolate and Gigondas’ combo last year and we are now totally convinced. This is one of our favourite pairings for pancakes as long as it has a little bottle age.
Savoury pairings for pancakes with cheese, ham or spinach
Try the lightly off dry Pinot Gris Ortel made for us by André Gruss at Domaine Gruss in Alsace. It has delicious orchard fruit flavours and slatey spice which works well with rich, savoury flavours that you encounter so much in Alsace. Perfect with strong melted cheese and ham.
Pairings for smoked Salmon blinis
Well … a sort of mini pancake! Try our delicious, rich and toasty Champagne Brut Origine from Champagne Fresne Ducret near Reims for a great combo. Otherwise, try our white burgundy Hautes Côtes de Beaune Les Larrets from Domaine Lucien Jacob. The elegant citrus flavours and gentle, spicy oak will complement the smoked salmon beautifully.
Pairings for crispy Duck pancakes
Again, a bit of licence here, but a killer combination would be a Pinot Noir. Try our delicious organic Heaphy Pinot Noir from Kahurangi Estate in New Zealand as a pairing for these more unusual pancakes. The ripe cherry, berry and vanilla spices and juicy texture should work nicely with this dish. If you prefer a more savoury style of Pinot, go for our organic Maranges Le Bois de Clémentine from Domaine Chevrot. It’s elegant, bramble fruit and spice personality will send you into raptures with this dish. It will even stand up to the plum sauce too!
