The picturesque town of Sancerre plays host to a delightful fair on the last weekend of August.
The foire is held in the old mushroom caves – Cave de la Mignonne – and comprises a colourful mixture of wine, food and craft stalls. All the main wine regions of France are represented, and it is therefore an ideal opportunity to taste many wines.
We stay at Le Panoramic hotel, renowned for its spectacular views and outdoor swimming pool overlooking the vineyards.
The weekend starts with a brief meeting in the hotel lounge at 4pm before strolling down to the foire, where we spend a few pleasurable hours, soaking up the atmosphere and sampling the wines (if desired).
In the evening we walk into the heart of Sancerre to the delightful La Tour restaurant. The food in this Michelin-starred restaurant is a perfect match for the stunning vineyard views from our upstairs dining room.
On Sunday morning, Pierre or Bertrand Riffault, our Sancerre winemakers, will meet us at la Maison des Sancerre. We will learn about the history, the complex terroir and winemaking practices of this famous region. Pierre will then be our guide for a coach tour of the local vine-laden hills en route to his vineyard at Chaudoux.
At his domaine we will enjoy a tour of his vineyard and cellar before being treated to a tasting of his superb Sancerre wines (white, rosé and red) and a sumptuous ‘gourmet’ picnic lunch in his garden.
As the lengthy lunch is quite substantial, we don’t arrange a group meal for the evening. There are plenty of options available, including a restaurant next door to the hotel. We can also make suggestions to suit your individual needs if you wish.
INCLUDES: 2 nights’ accommodation at Le Panoramic; dinner (with wine) on Saturday night, lunch on Sunday (with wine) and all wine tastings and activities. Coach transport on Sunday. £315 per person (members only), £349 per person (non-members). To reserve your place, please email email@example.com or use the form below:
