The words biodynamic and organic are becoming more prevalent in our day to day language — What once was thought of as ‘over the top’ or ‘eccentric’ is now a desirable certification of brilliant farming! In the words of Bob Dylan “Oh the times, they are a’changing…”. Movements like Earth Day 2018 have really rocked the status-quo. We at 3D Wines have the honour of working with some fantastic biodynamic and organic vineyards, and as today is Earth Day, we’d like to take the opportunity to celebrate these holistic methods of farming. Shout out to all our biodynamic and organic winemakers! As completely besotted wine lovers (as I’m sure you are!) you probably have had, at some point, questions about biodynamic and organic wines. Have no fear, 3D Wines is here to answer all your questions…
Q1. What’s the difference between biodynamic and organic wines?
Both of these methods represent an extremely high standard of winemaking. To be organically certified the grapes from a particular vineyard are grown using these 3 standards:
- Choosing only all-natural fertilisers and pesticides
- Using sustainable processes such as composting
- Practice organic methods for at least three years
These organic standards will be inspected and evaluated by a third-party certifying agent on how well the vineyard has done over the 3 years in keeping up organic farming. This is no easy task to accomplish! Well done to all our 3D vineyards which are organically certified!
On the other hand….. To be biodynamically certified the vineyard in question must already be organically certified. The winemaking process must also abide by the rules of the biodynamic calendar. The calendar is worked out using lunar cycles and specifies the best time to plant, prune and harvest grapes. It also let’s you know when the best time to drink wine is! (see question 4) “As you may imagine, sustaining an agricultural ecosystem is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Farmers who choose to practice biodynamic agriculture are adopting the lifestyle — the farmer becomes part of that ecosystem to achieve a successful.” Maria Trimarchi

Q4. When is the best time to drink biodynamic wine?
According to the biodynamic calendar, The best time to drink your wine is on Fruit days and Flower days. But even if today isn’t one of these days, don’t worry, I’m sure you’re allowed to make a toast to Earth Day 2018!
Q5. Are organic and biodynamic wines better than other wines?
The big question! As wine lovers we all pursue the perfect wine and sometimes we might wonder if all this biodynamic and organic malarkey really does push our wine to the next level. After all, there are many vineyards who adopt similar practises but are not certified. In fact, most of our other 3D vineyards adopt biodynamic and organic practises but are not actually certified. Some of them even gain awards for environmental consideration in their farming methods.
However, given that organic and biodynamic practices are in harmony with the laws of nature, I would personally be tempted to say that the resulting harvest has great potential. After that the results are subject to the talent of the winemaker!
In the end, it’s up to our taste-buds to decide on the better wine. It is, however, nice to know that there are more and more wines being produced sustainably through organic and biodynamic methods. You could even say that drinking these wines will help save the earth! That’s good enough for me 🙂
Happy Earth Day!
