The Côtes du Rhône appellation is effectively a huge swathe of vineyards throughout the southeast of France roughly between Montelimar and Avignon. Most of the wines are red, but there is some rosé and white made from vines based on Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvedre. The wines can be juicy and spicy and very well made on the whole.
The Cinsault and Grenache vines that produce our super biodynamic rosé are situated in a vineyard parcel called La Muse Papilles, not far from Gigondas.
Justine, the eldest daughter of Christine and Eric Saurel at Montirius, searched for a vineyard of her own seven years ago. It proved to be no easy task as she wanted to buy one in good condition that was already certified organic.
The plot she found is just under 6ha in size with what Justine describes as ‘perfect’ subsoil for her old Cinsault and Grenache vines. The plot is surrounded by olive trees – Justine makes her own organic and biodynamic olive oil too – and it has a magnificent backdrop of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mount Ventoux close by.
A delightful place to work and visit!
