About the vines & wine:
Your vines are situated on the flat boulder strewn plain that is classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. Here, these Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre vines are up to 100 years old and situated within the Palestor section of the vineyard. They are tended to organically.
The boulders carpet the vineyard surface and represent the finest part of the large Châteauneuf area. They are called Galettes Roulées. This land is difficult to work, especially when the Mistral wind blows hard, as it often does. Pascal laughs when he shows you the numerous implements that he has broken whilst working the soils. His backdrop though is spectacular – the iconic Mont Ventoux in the background as well as the incredible jagged mountain range called the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a heady blend of up to thirteen grape varieties. In reality, few use all thirteen – most use three or four. The wines are spicy, peppery and full bodied with tannins that become sweet and silky smooth with time.
Pascal makes delicious Châteauneuf. They are pure and fragrant, with lovely red and black fruits laced with herbs, spice and liquorice. Each year your exclusive blend changes, depending on the vintage, though heady Grenache or spicy Syrah usually forms the majority of the mix.
About the region:
The southern Rhône is full of history, stunning scenery and wonderful gastronomy. Obviously wine is a big attraction and almost everywhere, you can find brilliantly made wines from humble Côtes du Rhônes through to iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape. However, there is so much to see and do. If you enjoy walking or cycling, then heading for the Dentelles de Montmirail hills is a must. The views from here are stunning and you will see the famous wine villages dotted below. The climate is as warm and heady as the wines. The intoxicating smell of herbs – thyme and rosemary – from the garrigue scrubland are carried on the wind, along with the sound of cicadas that create a cacophony of sound at sunset. It’s a rugged, romantic, epic region that is just a stone’s throw away from the famous Côtes d’Azur … and another world, entirely!
Truffle Hunting in the Rhône. There is something rather mysterious about the truffle. Where do they come from? How are they found? Why are they so outrageously expensive and what do they really smell and taste of? These are the sort of questions any self-respecting gastronome would ask.
We at 3D are able to answer some of these questions with a fabulous trip to the south of France in February. You can get close up and personal with the truffle. Hunt for it, hold it, smell it, taste it and experience yourself the world’s most important truffle market in full swing at Richerenches.
Based in the beautiful Provençal hotel Le Moulin de Valaurie in the heart of the Drome, Provence, we spend time at the Bouchard winemaker’s lovely estate, Domaine des Grands Devers, in the hills near Valréas and hunt for truffles with an expert truffle dog. The warm hospitality of the family is wonderful. We lunch there and dine there in the evening, enjoying Louis-Pascal’s marvellous cooking and Paul-Henri’s delicious wines, carefully matched with all the truffle infused dishes.
We also visit the fascinating Montirius estate in Gigondas. This biodynamic vineyard is making waves with its fantastic wines. We are privileged to have been working with them now for over a decade. We learn a little of their philosophy in the vineyard and winery before a tasting and then a short trip for lunch at the beautiful Château Rochegude. It’s an exquisite place, perched on top of a hill with marvellous views all around. Their gourmet lunch, specially matched with Eric Saurel’s wines, is a very special dining experience, not to be missed.
