About the vines & wine:
Sancerre is one of France’s great classics. Based on the fashionable Sauvignon Blanc grape grown on cool chalky soils, the wines have thrilling acidity and lip-smacking flavours of gooseberry, grapefruit and nettles.
Most Sancerre is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc grapes from different parts of the region. Your exclusive Sancerre is a rare style, coming from one specific area.
Your vines are situated in a vineyard parcel called Les Caillottes. Here the limestone-based soil is carpeted with small white stones on the surface giving a more aromatic, fresh and fruity style of wine. However its fresh and vivacious green fruits in youth develop into a richer, luscious peach and apricot style with time.
The Riffault family have been making Sancerre for generations, and it is Bertrand Riffault who is now managing the domaine under the expert guidance of his father, Pierre.
About the Sancerre region:
This delightful region is situated right in the centre of France – some two hours from Paris. The old town is small and attractive and sits atop a large hill commanding spectacular views of the vineyards below.
The narrow cobbled streets lead to a small town square surrounded by a number of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Worth seeing is the Maison des Sancerre – a wine museum funded and run by the winemakers of the region. It is a modern presentation of all aspects of the history, geology and people of the region within a lovely renovated building.
If you want to dine in style, then the Michelin-starred restaurant La Tour is the place to go – the food is light, elegant and brimming with modern, innovative flavours.
Our Sancerre event:
Partner’s Sancerre Picnic & Foire aux vins is one of our most popular events which takes place at the end of August each year. It focuses on the beauty of the region. The small, neatly formed medieval town is sleepy yet charming with amazing views all around.
We dine in a Michelin-starred restaurant, attend the annual wine fair in the old mushroom caves and visit the splendid wine museum in the town. The highlight is the fantastic gourmet picnic on the Sunday, in the garden of the Riffault family.
This is a weekend that celebrates the true joys of France – great food, great wine, beautiful scenery and wonderful people.
