About the vines & wine:
This historic region known as the Côte d’Or or ‘golden slopes’ is divided into two; the Côte de Nuits in the northern part and the Côte de Beaune in the southern part. Your vines are based in the Côte de Nuits which covers a 20km stretch from Nuits-St-Georges to Dijon. In one of the most famous wine villages of all, called Gevrey-Chambertin, your En Songe vines nestle amongst the many other famous parcels of vines that characterise this wonderful area.
En Songe literally means ‘in a dream’ which is very apt as these vines are very special. The vine age is quite high which means the yields tend to be low as there are fewer bunches per vine. This also means that the resulting wines have wonderful concentration and depth, however there is a lightness and elegance to your Gevrey-Chambertin En Songe.
The vines are Pinot Noir, which thrive in the clay and limestone soils of the region. They say that Pinot Noir needs to be grown in marginal climates to get the best out of it. Burgundy is quite far north geographically and the continental climate can be highly changeable, adding to the challenges of the region. However, this is the greatest place on earth to grow Pinot Noir.
Your winemaker, Jean-Michel Jacob, is a big man with huge hands. However, this is somewhat misleading as he has a very delicate touch in the winery. His wines have lovely perfume and very fresh, distinct flavours of dark black cherry and blackberry fruit, spicy oak and delicious creamy textures.
About the region:
This famous and historical region is based on the eastern side of France, roughly between Auxerre in the north and Chalon-sur-Saône in the south. It is the spiritual home of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – the two principle grapes of the region. It is also considered to be the gastronomic region of France.
This third generation family led by Jean-Michel and his charismatic English wife Christine, are based high up in the beautiful Hautes Côtes in the pretty village of Échevronne, above the ancient wine capital of Beaune. They are a relaxed and very welcoming family – and very much enjoy meeting 3D Partners. They own 24 hectares of vines in some great locations throughout the region.
The Côte d’Or is a roll call of some of the greatest wine villages of them all. Names like Vosne-Romanèe, Morey-Saint-Denis, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet have great resonance. The ancient wine town, Beaune, is the capital of the region and is a delightful place to spend a few days. It is very picturesque and lively and features over 100 restaurants and bars. As this is the gastronomic centre of France, great food and wine is not hard to find.
This pilgrimage to the heart of Burgundy under the warm sunshine of June, during our Taste of Burgundy Weekend, will give you a wonderful insight into this beautiful, complex, mystical and beguiling region.
We are based in the beautiful, ancient wine capital of Beaune. It’s a wonderfully lively place with over 100 restaurants, and endless cafés and bars where you can sit outside, soak up the atmosphere and people watch. There is some marvellous architecture there too; ancient houses with brightly coloured tiled roofs dating back to the mid-15th century. The iconic Hospice de Beaune is a fantastic example of this and is well worth a visit.
Our event involves a visit to a local barrel maker to see the fascinating artisanal skills of a Tonellèrie. It also involves tasting Premier Cru Meursault within the famous vineyard itself with our award-winning winemaker Vincent Désertaux, eating in many superb restaurants and picnicking with the Jacob family at Domaine Lucien Jacob high up in the hills above their vineyards. The views are stunning, the food and wine is memorable and the company is unforgettable. A weekend you will always remember!
