16th February 2017 – Blending Partner’s exclusive Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge
Blending of our Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2015 today with the ever-smiling Pascal and Valérie Chastan at La Fagotière. It’s a deliciously fresh, spicy and hedonistic blend of 75 pc Grenache, 20 pc of Syrah and a field blend of about 5 pc Clairette, Counoise, Mourvèdre and Grenache Blanc. This is a legacy of grandfathers planting in the early days of Châteauneuf, which adds complexity and personality to their wines.
Pascal loves his tractors – and he shows immense enthusiasm for implements too. In Châteauneuf, because of the large boulder-sized stones that litter the surface of the vineyards, the land is hard to work. Strong implements are therefore required. A photo below shows the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of the blades that are use to work the soils. Now that’s what you call wear and tear!!
17th February 2017 – Blending Partner’s exclusive Côtes du Rhône-Villages rouge
Blending day for our Côtes du Rhône-Villages 2015 with the very charming Paul-Henri Bouchard at Domaine des Grands Devers.
2015 was a warm, sunny vintage which Paul-Henri described as ‘relaxing’. Our exclusive blend is a classic herb, garrigue and pepper-infused blend of 75 pc Grenache, 23 pc Syrah and 2 pc Carignan. It has more concentration and structure than most Côtes du Rhône-Villages’s and should deliver great pleasure for up to a decade. We will be tasting our 2005 CDRV with truffles tomorrow night!
Meanwhile, we are preparing ourselves for a visit to the truffle market at Richerenches on Saturday afternoon with the enthusiastic Louis-Pascal Bouchard followed by a hunt for them in the afternoon. We will also be polishing them off by the dozen at the special themed dinner chez Bouchard Saturday night. The visit to our biodynamic domaine, Montirius, on Sunday is also absolutely fascinating – wonderful people and lovely wines. Plenty to do this weekend with our fellow 3D gastronomes!
